Research Blog - Celtic Myths

Celtic Mythology is the mythology of celtic polytheism, the religion of the Iron Age Celts. Like other Iron Age Europeans, the early Celts maintained a polytheistic mythology and religious structure. Among Celts in close contact with Ancient Rome, such as the Gauls and Celtiberians, their mythology did not survive the Roman empire, their subsequent conversion to Christianity, and the loss of their Celtic languages. It is mostly through contemporary Roman and Christian sources that their  mythologyhas been preserved. The Celtic peoples who maintained either their political or linguistic identities (such as the Gaels, Picts and Brythonic tribes of Great Britaion and Ireland left vestigial remnants of their ancestral mythologies, put into written form during the Middle Ages.

Adventure, heroism, romance, and magic are a few of the elements that make Celtic mythology one of the most entrancing mythology one of the most entrancing mythologies of Europe. Once a powerful people who dominated much of Europe, the Celts were reduced to a few small groups after the Roman invasions. However, their mythology survived, thanks largely to the efforts of medieval Irish and Welsh monks who wrote down the stories.

The Celts

The Celts were a group of people who began to spread throughout Europe in the 1000s B . C . At the peak of their power, they inhabited an area extending from the British Isles int he west to what is now Turkey in the east. They conquered northern Italy and Macedonia, plundering both Rome and Delphi in the process. They had a reputation as fierce and courageous warriors and were viewed with respect by the Romans.

Celtic expansion reached its limits around 225 B.C., when the Celts suffered the first in a series of defeats by the armies of the Roman empire. Gradually, the Romans subdued the Celts, and by A. D .84, most of Britain was under Roman rule. At the same time, Germanic peoples conquered the Celts living in central Europe.

Just a few areas, notably Ireland and northern Britain, managed to remain free and to continue and pass on the Celtic traditions. Six groups of Celts have survived to modern times: the peoples of Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany.

The ancient Celts were neither a race nor a nation. They were a varied people bound together by language, customs and religion rather than by any centralized government. They lived off the land, farming and raising stock. No towns existed apart from impressive hill forts. However, by about 100 B.C., large groups of Celts had begun to gather at certain settlements to trade with one another.

Celtic society had a clearly defined structure. Highest in rank was the king, who ruled a particular tribe, or group of people. Each tribe was divided into three classes: the noble knights and warriors, the Druids (religious leaders), and the farmers and commoners. The Druids, who came from noble families, were respected and influential figures. They served not only as priests but also judges, teachers and advisers. In additions, it was widely believed that the Druids had magical powers.

The Myths

The ancient Celts had a vibrant mythology made up of hundreds of tales. They did not,  however, record their myths in writing but passes them on orally. Our knowledge of the gods, heroes, and villains
of Celtic mythology comes from other sources - mainly Roman. Yet the Romans sometimes reffered to Celtic gods by Roman names, so their accounts were not always reliable. Moreover, because the Romans and Celts were battlefield enemies, Roman Descriptions of Celtic beliefs were often unfavorable.

Other important themes in the myths were voyages to mysterious and dangerous lands and larger-than-life heroes. The heroes experienced all kinds of adventure and often had to perform impossible tasks before marrying their loved one. Love, romance, and mischief also figured prominently. The god played tricks on humans and on one another. Animals changed shape at will.

The Gundestrup cauldron is a silver vessel thought to have been made sometimes around 100 B.C.A symbol of abundance and renewal, the cauldron contains many scenes and characters from Celtic mythology.

Celtic Deities

Deity        Role

Brigit        goddess of learning, healing, and metalworking

Dagda      god of life and death

Danu        fertility goddness and mother of the Tuatha Dé Danaan

Epona      goddess associated with fertility, water, and death

Lug          god of the sun, war, and healing

Morrigan goddess of war and death

Many myths told of the otherworld. In this mysterious place, there was no work and no death, and the gods and spirits who lived there never got old. The Celts believed that humans could enter this enchanted place through burial mounds called sídhe, through caves or lakes, or after completing a perilous journey. After reaching the otherworld, they would live happily for all time.

Irish and Welsh Legends

Early Irish myths blend mythology and history by describing how Ireland was settled by different groups of Celtic deities and humans. Filled with magic and excitement, the tales tell of battles between forces of light and darkness. They describe a time when gods live not in the heavens but on earth, using their powers to create civilization in Ireland and to bring fertility to the land.

There are four cycles, or groups, of connected stories. The Mythological Cycle focuses on the activities of the Celtic gods, describing how five races of supernatural beings battled to gain control of Ireland. The Chief god was Dagda, whose magic cauldron could bring the dead back to life. The Ulster Cycle recounts the deeds of warriors and heroes, especially Cuchulain, the warrior and champion of Ireland. The Historical Cycle tells of the adventures and battles of legendary Irish kings. The Fenian Cycle deals with the heroic Finn Mac Cumhail, or Finn Mac Cool, leader of a band of bold warriors known as the Fianna. This cycle is filled with exciting adventures and tales of hand-to-hand combat.

Welsh mythology is found in the Mabinogion, a collection of 11 tales. In the Welsh myths, as in those of Ireland, the heroes often are half human and half divine and may have magical powers. Many of the stories in the Mabinogion deal with Arthurian legends, accounts of the deeds of Britain's heroic King Arthur and his knights.

historical events. The legends are clearly rooted in Celtic mythology however, and references to Arthur appear in a number of ancient Welsh poems. Scholars also note that there are many similarities between the Arthur stories and the tales of the Irish finn Mac Cumhail, suggesting a shared Celtic origin.

Another famous romantic story of Celtic origin is that of Tristan and Isolde. The tragic tale, probably based on an early Cornish poem, concerns the knight Tristan who falls in love with Isolde, a princess who is feted to marry his uncle the king. In the Middle Ages, Gottfried von Strassburg wrote a poem based on the legend that is considered a literary masterpiece.

Black Out

Malaysia is a democratic country - This is a goal we have yet to achieve. A long way to go.. The whole world should know - too much corruptions and dirty tricks. We will continue to fight the dark side and work on a much more cleaner and better country.

I'm not sure am i the right mood to blog because i bet most of us Malaysian feel the same way. Or maybe just part us. I couldn't fall as sleep yesterday, I was wondering how did it happen. How does it make sense but whether it make sense or not, It's official. I'm not sure what we can do but I really hope things will get better in the next 5 years. I mean that's what we wanted, a better malaysia.

But everything became a joke. I'm ashamed.

I'm really glad that we have Facebook where we can really see what is going on. I couldn't say all of them are real but at least it has more accurate information than what we seen on the TV. Couldn't blame them, our press freedom here is like shit. I think the TV announcer secretly wanted to die while trying to crap something that make sense. There's a moment when i started to think, way before we have Facebook, how many things were covered? News that we seen on TV are they even real? I can't tell anymore.

I admit i was kinda rude yesterday will all my sarcastic facebook posts but that's what i had on mind when i was reading all the news. I wouldn't be that angry if it's a clean election. Too many dirty tricks and it's so obvious everyone could tell. We're ain't stupid.

What I can't accept is such racist PM we have. Chinese Tsunami? Seriously??? I can tell that my Malay and Indian friends have bigger hearts than him. We've been here  for decades, and we can't afford to lose any race because that's what makes Malaysia is a beautiful place. Just that his words is such a disappointment.

5 years, I'm not sure what will happen in the next 5 years but they better be good, because they said, you don't mess with the 90's kids :) This is just a beginning don't lose hope people.

Malaysia Needs YOU!!

The Scream of writing review

First of all I have to sharing about writing review which is called "The Scream". The Scream is the popular name given to each of four versions of compositions, created as both paintings and pastels, by the Expressionist artist Edvard Munch between 1893 and 1910. The Scream of Nature is the title Munch gave to these works, all of which show a figure with an agonized expression against a landscape with a tumultuous orange sky. Arthur Lubow has described The Scream as "an icon of modern art, a Mona Lisa for our time." Unfortunately in 1908, Munch suffered a nervous breakdown, after which his portrait paintings forever were changed by this traumatic experience. Form this nervous breakdown came out one of the most significant works of art, along all lines regardless of secular viewpoints.

The Scream is the most important and work known work of art by Edward munch, and has been the subject of many discuss groups, and continues to this day, to be a point of argument and conjecture. The painting is marvelously done in only a few basic and primal colors. This is unusual for work of this time era as many of the competitive and collaborate artist of Munch, used a multitude, almost a plethora of basic colors and joined-mixed colors, too attempt to recreate, the effect of natural beauty in both nature and portraits.

What Munch done is to create a very strong emotional painting and use only a basic set of naturally occurring coloration options. Set near a bridge, and what could have been any number of bridges in Norway of western Europe, the painting shows a man in terror or at least distress, covering his ears, as two individuals are seen walking away. The clouds and the river make The Scream, very interesting to loom at and think about. With so much emotional appeal and so much theory about the cause and effect of The Scream, one would be hard-pressed to find another painting that is so intertwined in controversy, and perfection, all at once.

The Scream, offers a plethora of emotions, from fear and panic, to excitement, and even rage. In the end only Munch truly knows what The Scream is trying to say, and the story has it that he took that to his grave, in 1944. Edward Munch, and The Scream, is two of the most indelible and penetrating works of art in all of the world's portrait painting endeavors. Munch created several versions of the screen and also use several different forms of media, as well here it the Munch museum presently holds two of the painted versions, and one solitary pastel variation of these screen. The National Gallery of Norway holds the only other painted version, which is the one that most people are most readily familiar with. All in all any version of The Scream, by Edward Munch, is a priceless entity and one that will be argued about, till the end of time.

Blogger interview questions

So you want to know more? Here are some of the more commonly asked questions, seperated into categories.

Personal:

When and why did you start your blog?

It was April 2009 when i started my blog. I wanted to capture the looks and clothes I had and I've always felt bad not writing a diary, so a blog was a perfect solution! I also thought that it would be a good way of sharing ideas on the way I dress to people who has the same interest as myself.

Why do people read your blog?

I've been told I am funny, honest, open, and give interesting viewpoints. Or maybe it's my statement-making hairstyle that's been grabbing people's attention. It may also be the high-quality pictures I posted, which could have brought greater emphasis on the details of my outfit.

Advertising /Sponsorship

How much does it cost to advertise with you?

Blog advertorial : RM3,500 and up
Sidebar banner :  RM500 a month
You Tube : RM4,000 per month
Facebook : RM300
Twitter : RM300

Above are in Malaysia Ringgit. All ads must be specific as and ad. I don't do ads for blogshops or coupon site anymore. If you are okay with all these, you can email me at joyce.lee@blogspot.com

Will you help people to advertise about charity/ lost pet / kin who is ill and needs donations?

Most likely not. I receive way too many of these request and it is not really what my blog is about. However, as an animal lover, I fully support the banning of animal slaughtery to be made as fashion items such as reptile shoes and belts, or even their fur as coats and scarves. As my beliefs are not something I share publicly on my blog, I would prefer to keep them to myself as I feel that I don't have the rights to influence my reader on their personal beliefs. Thus one of the reasons why I decline non-fashion-related advertisements.

Style / Fashion / Shopping:

You look so fashionable! Has fashion always been a big part of your life?

First of all, thank you so much! I've been into fashion since 13 and it is definitely a major part of my life ever since then. I love fashion because it makes me happy. I have been surrounded by creative people since young- my grandmother was seamstresses and my uncle is an interior designer, so that is where i got influenced the most. It has also been a medium for me to express my personally through my outerwear.

You are an art student and want to get a degree in Fashion Design. What is your dream for the future when it comes to fashion?

After graduating Fashion school, my dream future would be to work at well-known fashion label or have a career in a fashion magazine! Another recent dream would be becoming a fashion photographer as photography has become another new love of mine.

Your blog is often about your style. How would you describe your personal style?

There is no one word that describes my style. My personal style is trendy. My dressing is influenced by what people don't wear because I love being an individual in fashion. I believe that everyone should have an unique style because what you wear definitely reflects your personality.

You are from Malaysia and live in ireland. Who are your favorite designers in these countries?

In Ireland, local designers I like are Don O'Neill and Lainey Keogh. I've been in Ireland for 2 years so i yet to have my favourite designers from Malaysia. But Malaysia is a definitely a country which has a bigger fashion industry than Ireland.

What is according to you an absolute must-have for this summer?

An absolute must-have for this summer, first of all has to be Sunscreen, SPF is deadly important for sunny summer days! Fashion-wise, wide-brim hats, espadrille wedges, vintage denim cut-offs, flawy maxi dresses and anything aztec, crochet or pastel!

Your blog is very popular. Can you give advice to girl that want to become a fashion blogger?

If you want to start a fashion blog, you must have the confidence to post outfit pictures of yourself because the entire world might view it. Don't copy from other fashion blogs, but do take inspiration. if you intend for your blog to be photographic, invest in a good camera because low quality photos can look unprofessional and wouldn't be as attractive for the readers because couldn't look into details of your outfit. Blog for enjoyment not for anything else.

12 stages of the Hero's Journey - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

  • The call to Adventure
Recognition of Harry's first adventure at Hogwards is prompted by receipt of the Daily prophet newspaper. Harry recognizes the vault number that was broken into a Gringotts Bank and he knows that Hagrid removed a small item shortly before the attempted robbery. He shares the information with his friends Ron and Hermione. It is the mystery of immortality that beckons them to the adventure. Before crossing the threshold, the trio gathers clues, spells and knowledge of devices (invisibility cloak, broom flying, wizard chess, and the mirror of Erised) that will help solve the mystery.
  • Refusal of the call
When Harry reads the letter telling him that he is a wizard, he goes into a state of disbelief and instantly rejects the idea of going off with Hagrid. this is because as much as he would love to leave the Dursleys, he doesn't believe in such a things as magic. This is a result of him having been raised by a family of muggles( or people without magical capabilities) he thinks that magic is only the fabricated stories in fairytales and fantasies, that it doesn't exist. But after he thinks it through, he decides that it is true because it would explain all the strange thing he do. He is experiencing conflicts with himself, whether magic truly exits or not. He changes in the way that this meeting with Hagrid has given him hope, a possibility of leaving the Dursleys.
  • Meeting the mentor
Hagrid, the mentor, first meets with Harry when he brings the call of adventure. Hagrid offers both knowledge and emotional support for Harry. He is the first one to tell Harry that he is a wizard and also acts as a guide by helping Harry cross the threshold into the magic world and telling him details on how he and voldemort are related. Later on, Hagrid also provide crucial information that helps Harry and his friends figure out about the Sorcerer's Stone.
  • Crossing the First Threshold
In addition to introducing us to the magical world for the entire adventure, also include the threshold to the first trial. Harry must prevent an envil force from obtains the philosopher's stone. Again, there are so many does, but the gateway to proceed with the adventure presents itself when encountering cerberus, the gate guardian ( otherwise reffered to as fluffy).
  • Test, Allies, Enemies
Harry fears Voldemort. This fear is enhanced through the stories he hears. There are several obstacles to moving forwards such as "The sorting", performing magic and making friends. Harry uses modesty, courage and bravery to make it through these trials. He receives assistance from Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, Hagrid and even Snape.
  • Approach to the inmost cave
Harry reaches the inmost cave when he gets to the trap door that leads to the sorcerer's stone. Fluffy, the threshold guardian, stands on top of the door to guard it from intruders, within the cave there are various new obstacles that Harry Potter has to pass. They are all very dangerous and life threading, and now he has to face them with just depending on the training he's gotten so far from his teacher. This obstacle is also dangerous just solely because voldermort is in there. The only reason is going through all this is to get to the stone before voldermort does because otherwise it will be used to keep voldermort alive forever.
  • Ordeal
Harry's supreme ordeal would be when he is facing Quirrell. This is more challenging than the other test before it because he is entirely unprepared for it, he doesn't know what to expect and also, Ron and Hermione do not make it to he innermost cave with him so they cannot help him in anyway. This ordeal brings Harry close to death because after Quirrell You-Know-Who try to get the stone, they will try to kill Harry (or kill him in order to get the stone).
  • Reward
Harry gets the Sorcerer's stone. It is valuable to Harry because he does not want it to fall into the wrong hands. But another reward it that Harry sort of finds his self worth, which connects to his problem of not fitting in in the ordinary world. Now he knows that he has a place in the world and that he is able to accomplish things bravery and determination that he's never known he had before.
  • The road back
After Harry finds that the sorcerer's stone is in his pocket, he needs to find a way to defeat Quirrell / You-Know-Who while at the same time pretending them from acquiring it. Quirrell and You-know-who stand in Harry's way. When Quirell /You-Know-Who was strangling Harry, he grabbed their face, causing the part he touched to disintegrate. As it turns out, when You- Know-Who tried to kill Harry, his mother cast aspell to protect him so that You-Know-Who could not touch him. What this shows about Harry and also why Harry is a Hero is that/ because he was willing to do anything to protect the stone from evil, even when it did not benefit his needs.
  • Resurrection Hero
The supreme ordeal changed Harry through giving him determination and bravery and teaching him that he can depend on himself. As a result of surviving the tests, he found true and dedicated friends in Ron and Hermione because they would go into the most dangerous places with and for him if he needed them to and they would contribute as much as they could to it. As a result of surviving his supreme ordeal, he found that he was very brave and that with bravery and determination, he can surpass difficulties.

  • Return with the Elixir
When Harry returns to the ordinary world (and to the Dursleys), he brings back the knowledge that he will be going back to Hogwarts the next year, which gives him something to look forward to. He also brings back all his school supplies (including his wand) as a reminder of that. With his reward of knowing that he possesses a strong sense of determination and bravery, he will be able to cope with living the the Dursleys more than before. He will not let them (mostly Dudley) push him around as much as he did before, but still keeping a respect for them (except for Dudley), as they are still his guardians.

Do you know what really annoys me!!??

Hello everyone. It occurred to me that in my second post here, I told you about a bunch of things I like, but only a two things I don't like. And you know what...there's a lot of shit that annoys/irritates/irks/pisses me off and I'd like to know that I'm not alone in this.
So I'm going to go through a few things that piss me the Hell off and I ask you, my friends, to comment and let me know whether or not I'm alone in my disdain. Okay. Deep breaths!!
Here we go:
Self-Doubt:

Here's the deal: self-doubt doesn't do anybody any good. All it does is nag at you like some kind of needy little child. And not like a cute child. I mean like one of those 7 year old kids in Appalachia who's missing teeth because he drinks too much goddamn Mountain Dew. Like this:

You know what really annoys me!!?? When people are like "Oh, save the animals, don't hurt them don't kill them,"but they arem't vegetarian! I'm like "thething that hurts animals most is eating them!"

You absolutely must watch this performance!! I'm not kidding when I say to you that I believe this to be the most extraordinary performance that Miss Whitney has ever given. And the look?!?! BAAAAABY!!! She is just hot as Hell here. The glistening late-80s/early-90s transitional dress. The curly wig. KILLING IT from the toes up!!!

(Whitney just living her life at the Billboard Music Award in 1990)
